Hi Everyone!

Here is your weekly dose of "5 Mindful Musings", a brief list of what's helping me live a more mindful life.

What I Am Listening To

To give better advice, try less fixing and more listening. 'When friends and family ask for advice, it's more complicated. It can be fraught — sometimes we know too much and it can be difficult to remain objective. Also, if we don't get it right, we could hurt someone we love. It works that way for a lot of us. Helping a stranger can be easier than advising someone we've known forever. Turns out, good advice is often about loosening the body, opening the mind and, more often than not, keeping your mouth shut.'

What I Just Published

What Is Mindfulness Meditation. This is an outline of what it is, why it has been practiced around the world for hundreds of years and, most important, why so many people continue to make meditation a part of their day to relieve stress and anxiety, create caring relationships, and simply to create an oasis of quiet and reflection in the midst of daily demands.

What I Learned Recently

In his most recent workshop for our Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Training Program, Chris Germer led a session on shame and how to work with it using mindfulness and self-compassion. He highlights three key components of working with shame:

1. Mindfulness - recognizing the shame that is present while it is present

2. Compassion - responding to what is present with kindness and compassion

3. Working with backdraft - addressing the distress that arises when we give ourselves compassion.

You can listen to this part of the workshop here.

What I Just Discovered

Spotify created "Sean Fargo Radio". Unbeknownst to me, Spotify created this 'radio' playlist of meditations by similar mindfulness teachers, including Davidji. I've never heard of most of the teachers here, so it's nice to discover like-minded people who are spreading good juju into the world. I'd love to hear whether you think this playlist is helpful for you.

A Poem I Love

The Unbroken

There is a brokenness

out of which comes the unbroken,

a shatteredness

out of which blooms the unshatterable.

There is a sorrow

beyond all grief which leads to joy

and a fragility

out of whose depths emerges strength.

There is a hollow space too vast for words

through which we pass with each loss,

out of whose darkness we are sanctioned into being.

There is a cry deeper than all sound

whose serrated edges cut the heart

as we break open

to the place inside which is unbreakable

and whole

while learning to sing.

Wishing you love,

Sean Fargo , Founder, Mindfulness Exercises
